From Craig

The band that I am in recorded Born To Be Wild in my home studio
using the VF-16. The studio is minimal with budget equipment.	Below
is a summary.

Nady SCM 900 condenser mic for vocals and two Marshall MXL 1006BP
condenser mics for drums. BBE 362NR for noise reduction, Yorkville
YSM-1p monitors, Yamaha DG-130HA guitar head, Digitech VGS-2120
guitar effects processor, Really Nice Compressor used to compress the
drums.	I use the VF-16 internal compressor to compress the vocals and
bass. The guitar used was a Carvin DC135C.

"The Beautiful People" This is an old MM tune from anti-christ superstar. I'm only 15, but i love my vf-16 (i've had it for almost 2 years now) this is my latest one. this is how it was recorded:

Guitars: Sanota Electric Guitar - Pod 2.0 - Vf-16
Bass: Washburn bass - Pod 2.0 - vf-16
Drums- Kick - d112 - composer pro - vf-16
           snare - sm57 - composer pro - vf-16
           overheads - Mxl603s - Art TBS pre-amps - Vf-16
Vocals - shure sm48 into vf-16 (on the backing vocals i also ran the mic through the Pod 2.0 for some of them)

Then i imported the song into Acid for the opening sound and the vocie samples.

Guitar:
PreAmp – SUNN2416
The guitar we recorded direct in, we are planning to go back and overdub the guitar tracks but haven’t gotten to it yet. We think the guitar tracks sound good as they are so no immediate rush there.
Keys (Yamaha Motif 7):
PreAmp – SUNN 2416
It was the first time we used the SUNN 2416 mixing board, our guitarist has one so I thought let’s give it a try. Normally we use the Mackie CFX20 to pre-amp everything when we are recording. I really like the sound the SUNN puts out, I wish I could find some specs on this board.

From Steely John

These 3 songs were recorded and mastered on the VF 16. They feature a live drummer, bass, guitars, mandolin, keyboards, percussion. The guitars were tracked through a digitech RP 5, Bass recorded direct, mando direct and mic'd with a Marshall V67, percussion and drums with a combination of the Marshall as the overhead and audix dynamics on the kick and snare. The overall reverb is through an Lexicon MPX200.

From Alan

On my website, I have a few MP3's up. I have tons more done, but since the site can only hold about 3 and the bandwidth is VERY limited, that's all that is there for now (until I bite the bullet and actually pay the $7.95 /month for better web hosting).

All that aside, the songs were recorded on the VF-160 using a Line 6 POD 2.0 for the guitars and a dbx 266xl for the compression.

The drums are courtesy of the Boss DR-670. Hope you like the tunes. They fall into the alt/pop/rock genre so you don't have to cover your kids' or grandma's ears or anything. Feel free to leave feedback in the guestbook on the site.

From Dust

This tune was done in a spontaneous fashion, completely on the VF16, and, well,....it's a bit off the cuff, yet had such real feel, we had to post it! we are in the process of doing a perfect take, but we wanted to unveil it here, for a special audience...an Alternative Country type song, form the Heart(land)!!!
Done with a Les Paul, a Tele, a nice condenser mic, and a crappy little drum machine.

Our band is know as Dust....here's the link!!!!!!

From Music for Viola
Finally I put my Fostex to good use.

I recorded this song for a friend(and fellow Fostex user) who releases a CD collection of Christmas songs written by bands in the Richmond VA area.

Please send comments on the recording and mixing to:

From Aaron
This is the first full band recording I've done on my vf-160.

I have a shure 57 and two 58s and a handful of mics that are slightly better than crap. I recorded everything onto the vf-160 and then burned the wavs to cd and mixed in Cubase.

Any feedback is welcome.

Send to: abaker88@hotmail.com

The song is called "Take What I Make -

Demo" http://www.mp3.com/the_vf

From Tim
Everything on this song was done on the VF-16 including effects and mixdown. Microphones used include:  AT 4033 for vocals and clean electric. Octava MK12 for acoustic, RS 3033 for high and mid toms,  AT Pro 25 for kick and floor.
Octava MK12s for overheads. SM57 for lead guitar part.

I copied stereo wav files to my PC via zip drive and then created a single WAV file with Goldwave.

From Dirk

Hi,

I thought I'd submit my page: http://www.mp3.com/schaltstern

From Mark
I finally finished work on my first CD.  It was recorded entirely on my VF-16.  Mix down was done direct to .WAV file through a M-Audio 2448 optical
card.  No editing or mastering software was used, so it's basically "raw" VF-16 stuff.  All effects are the VF-16's internal processors.

No guitar amps were used... everything was direct through a Zoom GFX-8 effects board.  The drums are one of two drum machines, an Alesis HR-16 or a Zoom RT-123.  Keyboard was a Roland XP-10.  Various guitars used (Carvin, Ibanez, Kramer (the older USA-built Kramers) and G&L.  Enjoy!

From Steve
I recently finished recording a young band from Paris, Kentucky called Isaac's Blessing.  The tracks were recorded on the VF-16 and then transferred to my Mac running LogicAudio for cleanup.  BTW, the first 2 songs on this page are their home demos; mine are listed under "The Versailles Project".

From Mac
"Here's a blues tune cut on my VF-16. It's just a little pick up thing me and a few guys made up. I think this was the 3rd take, and we added the keyboards about a week later. Yamaha drums, '73 fretless P-bass, fine old strat, vintage tele (black and gold), a few condensers & some 57s, etc. I'd really appreciate any advice, suggestions, and comments you'll share with me."

From Sean
"I'm a midi phreak from way back (remember cv/gate?). Been twiddling knobs and programming beats since junior high (20 years flys by quickly!).

"My pared down equipment list is currently: Korg MS-2000 - Synthesizer; Roland SP-808 - Groovesampler; Roland MC-505 - Groovebox; Fostex VF-16 Recorder.

"Full Thrust is my first track done on the vf-16. The music portion of it was done entirely with a Roland MC-505 Groovebox.

"I taped a preacher giving a sermon on how everyone should heal each other with the laying of the hands... then I added some rhythm tracks and tweaked it with effects.

"Feedback is welcome and thanks for listening!!"

From Cat Rood
"I am a female rock guitarist and I have 2 new instrumental songs that I recorded entirely on my new Fostex VF-16 and will have more up soon. The songs are 'Frantic' and 'The Battle is not Lost'. I ran the guitar (an Ibanez RG570) through a Digitech RP100 and then direct into the VF-16; used an Alesis SR16 for the drum patterns; ran my Fender bass direct; and used a Korg Poly 800 and Alesis Nanosynth for the keyboards.

"On the drum tracks (drum machine and or synth) I E.Q. them after the fact by boosting the lows for the kick and the highs for the cymbals . I also add a little doubling and a lot of reverb. The drum tracks are always centered.

"I use a little low end E.Q. (pre post) on the bass, but not much (I usually don't have to on the Fostex- unlike my old Korg D-8) and it is always centered. I can record the bass direct in and it sounds fine.

"I pan the keyboard tracks hard left and right and sometimes add a tiny bit of reverb (but usually not).

"I pan the guitar Lead tracks slightly left and right (since I usually have more than one) and add a little reverb.

"The rhythm guitar (which I sometimes have more than one track) is usual either center or just slightly to one side and I usually add a little chorus."

"I sent in a link a while ago when I had three songs up from my VF-16 (Anagenesis parts 1-3) from my solo project, Original Organism. Well since then I have 2 more songs up, "Searebrum" and "The Social Creatures". They were both recorded on the VF-16, and I used pretty much the same equipment as w/the Anagenesis stuff. Anyway, check 'em out!"

From Radio Bikini
"The two newest songs from Radio Bikini, "Summer Sands" and "Carry Me Home" were both recorded using the VF-16. Radio Bikini is currently a two piece band, and we used just about all 16 tracks for both songs. Fender Bass and Carvin guitar (via Digitech RP2000) were recorded direct, drums came from a Yamaha keyboard. The effects were courtesy of the Fostex unit, although final EQ and compression was added after the fact. More info on the band can be found at
Sin Limo Studios".

So Beautiful (mp3)

From Daniel (Imported From Nowhere)
"We recorded our first album entirely with the VF-16. Drums, bass and rhythm guitars were recorded live at the rehearsal room. We used an AKG D112 for kick drum, an SM57 for snare and three SM58's for tom's. The line out of the bass amp was sent direct into the VF-16; for the guitars I used an SM57 and SM58. Overdubbed some rhythm guitars afterwards and recorded the solo guitar tracks with a Boss GT-3 going direct into the VF-16. For the voice I rented a Neuman. I mixed directly to the computer and used a Lexicon MPX 100, Behringer MDX2200 compressor and a 31-band Furman stereo equalizer in addition to the internal effects."

From Spunn
"I've recorded a variety of things on my lil' ol' VF-16 and have been happy with the results.

"I have a multitude of "bands" that I am in and we record in a 2 car garage in the middle of a field. One of the bands I am in has four guys who all live in different cities. We get together every 6 months or so and "Make an album". We recorded four songs one weekend on the VF-16, and they are the first four songs at our site: Spunn

"Everything's Wrong was recorded live onto the VF-16 with one guitar overdub and two vocal overdubs. The drums were mic'd with an SM-57 on the snare, an SM-58 on the kick, an Electro-Voice Midnight Blue on the floor tom, and another SM-58 on the tom. The bass amp was mic'd with an SM-58, and I also ran a patch cord from the line-out on the amp and recorded a direct track. The guitar amp was mic'd with one of those 200 dollar MXR mic's they give away at Mars Music if you buy a VF-16. The guitar overdub and vocal overdubs were also done with this mic. The song was mixed entirely using the VF-16's effects - a little overall compression, and some reverb on the snare and vocals. I kept both the mic'd and direct bass signals, panning them hard left/right and it actually adds some life to the bass.

"After the Fact was tracked with the same setup as before, only there was no live bass. The guitarist ended up overdubbing bass as the bassist had to leave, and he also added a second guitar part and overdubbed a solo as well. There are three vocal parts that I overdubbed. To mix this I ran an Alesis dual compressor as the two outboard effects - one for the bass only and one for the drums only. I also used overall compression from the VF-16 along with a little multitap delay on the vocals. I rode the levels on the vocals as well while I was mixing. I had to work with EQ a bit on the drums as well, and added reverb to the snare. On the kick drum I took out alot of the mids which really made it punchier and cancelled out some of the bleed from the guitar amp.

The other two songs at Spunn that were on the VF-16 are "Scratches and Dents" and "The Windows of My Mind." I mastered the four songs using SoundForge on my PC - mainly using the normalizing feature.

"The other track I've done is a one-man-band silly thing I did with a little help from the Alesis compressor - its called "Too Funky" and was recorded impromptu as a "theme song" for a film a friend is making. I love being able to have three drum tracks, two trumpets, two bass, two clavinet, one guitar, two backup vocals and one lead vocal and STILL HAVE THREE EMPTY TRACKS! Please keep in mind this song was built from the drums up by one guy in about an hour - I played everything and made up the vocals on the spot - one take. Here's the link for what I call The Sassy Astronauts-Too Funky."

From Dustin (apple of His eye)
"We used our church's mixer for the drums because I didnt have the XLR-to-Phone adaptors soldered yet, so the drums were sub-mixed; but in the future they will all be on the Fostex. The guitar and bass were recorded while the drummer was playing, causing some mic bleed (can hear drums on guitar track faintly) but it was low enough to be acceptable. Later, vocals were recorded in a quiet room with the vocalist using headphones. Compression to the drums was done by copying the track to 16, then applying compression. So we actually had 2 drum tracks, one dry and the other wet. The combination of both was better than either alone. The bass track was re-recorded, because the bass player messed up a lot; that's where the fostex really shined."

From Caitlyn
"Here are three songs from our latest cd "Save Yourself". All songs are recorded on a VF-16 in our rehearsal room. We've used a Korg AX1000G as AUX for some special effects, but that's all. Mastering was done in Wavelab 2.0. Please visit our web site for more info about us."

From Alan
"The only electric guitar I used on the songs was my Schecter A-7 7 string. I also used a crappy Yamaha classical acoustic for Part 3 and a Rogue 5-string bass for all 3 songs. Since I mostly work alone, I don't have a whole lot of equipment (as far as mics and stuff), so I recorded all the guitars and bass with my Johnson J-Station, except for the acoustic guitar. For the acoustic guitar and all vocals (as well as some weird effects added throughout) I used an AKG C2000B mic with a Presonus Blue Tube pre-amp. (I used an ME-30 guitar preamp for some vocal effects at the begining of Part 3). As far as drums go, they were all done with a Boss DR-5 drum machine. (I don't have any real drums, and probably would have a hard time recording them if I did... and i wouldn't know how to play them very well!) I also used the DR-5 for the keyboard parts. Also, for the solo at the end of Part 3 I ran my 7-string through a DigiTech Whammy-2, then the ME-30 (for wah) and then into the J-Station. I used SoundBlaster .Wav Studio to record them into my computer."

From Muffinhead Audio (aka: Danielle G.)
"This is my very first recording done on the VF-16. The song 10000 Miles is by Bindle, a local Dallas band. These guys are ex-band mates so I have the pleasure of gaining great experience with recording a real live rock band.

"I recorded the drums with AKG D112 on kick, 2 AKG C418 on the toms, Sennheiser e604 on the snare, Oktava MC012 on the Hi-hats, Audio Technica AT822 stereo mic for the overheads. I doubled the bass direct w/ART MP TUBE pre and mic'ed the bass cab with the AKG D112. 3 tracks of guitar with an Audio Technica 4033a and 2 vocals, 1 with the Audio Technica 4033a and the other with MXL 2001p. I used the ART MP on the guitar track and both vocal tracks. I had to use a Mackie board to get the extra inputs. I dumped this realtime via the in-line to Steinberg Wavelab for mastering and turning into a MP3. This is a long way from sounding pro. But we were all surprised with the quality we got with little fuss. This was fun! I hope to cut a CD EP for these guys using the VF-16. Cheers!"

From Steve
"Here's a recently-completed sound bed I did for a hospital's television campaign in Lexington, Kentucky. The project used an Alesis QS6.1 (piano, choir), a BOSS Dr. Groove (loops & noises). The Fender P-bass came digitally out of a Johnson Amplification J-Station. The acoustic guitars were mic'ed with a RODE NT-1 direct into the VF-16's preamps. The VF-16 drove my Mac's s Emagic sequencer, which controlled playback of everything but the guitars."

Sound Bed (mp3)

From Mel & Rob
"I used the VF-16 to record, mix, and master. I then created a .wav file on the computer with TotalRecorder 3.0 via the line in. I used MusicMatch to create an .mp3 file and burned a cd on an external HP CD writer Plus. I used a Radio Shack Shure Highball mic for vocal and went direct from the guitar into the VF-16. My moniters were JVC's that I powered with an Akai Pro 10 PA head."

Icing On My Cake (mp3)

From Paul C.
"I plugged the bass direct to the board using the onboard compression. I used an Alesis SR-16 for drums and used the direct record mode to record these. For the guitar, I put my amp [Super Reverb], in the bathroom, hung some towels around, and mic'd it with an SM57. The vocal was done using an SM58. I used the insert on the vocal mic channel to send that signal through a JOE MEEK VC3Q. At mix down, I first mixed to tape and then sent that mix to a CD recorder."

Found Out (mp3)

From David Z.
"The song "Who Am I to Say?" by Merry Cherry was recorded entirely on the VF-16. Since at the time of the recording, Merry Cherry only consisted of two people, the drum tracks were courtesy of a Yamaha keyboard. Lead vocalist Christian also played acoustic guitar and bass, while I did the electric guitar duties. Good thing the VF-16 has 16 tracks as we used 14 of them! All the bass and guitar tracks were recorded direct into the VF-16, either straight in (with the bass and acoustic guitar) or through a Digitech RP2000 for the electric guitars."

Who Am I To Say? (mp3)

From Bill H.
"I recently finished this one which uses a pair of SM58's to record the drums, a single SM58 for the flute, using the VF16's reverb (at mixdown). The rhythm guitar (Martin D15) was miked with both SM58's, one pointing downward near the base of the neck and the other low pointing upwards towards the sound hole. The lead (Gretsch 6120DEO) was done straight in through a Boss ME-30."
